Joe Malone is a thoughtful conservative, a proven reformer, and an independent-minded Republican.
In 1991, Joe was elected State Treasurer. Four years later, he was reelected – winning almost 70% of the vote.
During his eight years, he reformed the Treasury and modernized its departments, cutting operating costs by 62%.
As head of the State Lottery, he reduced Lottery expenses as a percentage of gross sales from 4.4% to 2.2% — the lowest of any lottery in the nation.
Under his leadership, the performance of state pension funds went from worst to best, in a comparison with other states. In 1996 the Legislature adopted Malone’s proposal to merge the state’s two pension funds, thereby saving $100 million over the next five years. Those savings continue today.
Joe was honored by the nationally respected Center for Policy Alternatives in 1996 with their Pathfinder Award for his innovative approach to government.
Since leaving government, Malone has helped build two companies, one specializing in business development and the other in enterprise software. In total, Joe has been involved with eight successful start up companies. He’s also been a TV personality on Boston’s Fox TV station, Channel 25, discussing current events.
Joe is the son of Italian immigrants and the youngest of seven children. He grew up in Waltham where he attended public schools and graduated from Waltham High in 1973. He went on to prep at Phillips Academy in Andover before enrolling at Harvard University as a government major. While at Harvard, Joe was on the football team and winner of the prestigious Henry Lamar award. He is a 1978 graduate.
A life long summer resident of Scituate, Joe and his family became permanent members of the community in 2003. Joe and Linda have four children, – Joey, 21, Sam, 18, Carolyn, 16, Charlie, 12, and they are guardians to Rodney, 19. They have a black lab, Bonnie.
